We believe transparency is the key to everything. We're open about the effort that goes into creating our products and all the hands they touch. Making something as simple as a pair of leggings isn't so simple if you want to make it sustainably. That's why we share the many micro-decisions that go into our product development process at Girlfriend Collective. Our customers want, and have a right, to know what goes into creating the clothes they wear and love.

Recycled Materials
Not to brag, but in 2016 Girlfriend Collective was among the first to make performance activewear from recycled materials. Since then, we’ve perfected our range made from post-consumer plastic waste. It includes five core premium recycled fabrics: Compressive, FLOAT, Reset, Luxe, and SuperTrack. (Pro tip: head to our Fabric Guide to discover your fave).
We’re always interested in new sustainable fabrics, and will occasionally introduce them to our collections. If (and only if) they get your seal of approval, we’ll add them to our core offering.
HOW DID GIRLFRIEND COLLECTIVE COME ABOUT?
It all started with our founders, Ellie and Quang Dinh, who had the idea of creating a conscious clothing brand, but it really took form after we honed in on activewear which is typically made from virgin plastic. We stumbled upon a way to make polyester entirely from recycled water bottles and we knew we had something special.
Our ultimate goal is to make the best sustainable alternative to synthetic activewear, something that combines performance, function, and fashion, and makes you feel good when you wear it. Within that, our top priorities are using recycled materials, committing to ethical manufacturing, and representing the beautiful spectrum of our customer base through our product offering and marketing.
We’d love to be a resource for our community on ways to be more sustainable in their daily lives, from new products to education. Sustainability can feel really overwhelming at times — there is so much that needs to be done and it is very difficult in modern society to make zero waste, so many people throw their hands up and say, “This is impossible, I can’t do anything!”. But in reality, if we all did our part to change our habits and be as good to the earth as possible, we could truly make a difference.
We’d love to be a resource to support our community in being the best they can be, and encourage people who may not be knowledgeable about sustainable practices to take their first step.

The vision and force behind Gingerlilly is Vanessa Sofia. Vanessa has been in the industry from an early age. Joining the family business, she picked up tips along the way with a hunger to learn. This may have had something to do with the influence of her mother, Grace Sofia (pictured). Grace ran a successful children's wear brand, Prodigee, with over 30 stores around Australia. Grace and Vanessa have a close relationship and work in harmony with one another. Actively involved in the design process, Grace supports and mentors Vanessa to discover new trends and designs. Both strongly believe that two minds are better than one and live by the golden rule that if either doesn't like a product, it's not worth sharing with their customers.
